Multimedia Project Description and Inventory            

Each finished project must include the following:

• 1 Artist’s statement *
• 1 Statement of purpose (onscreen in the feature is fine)                   
• 1 Self evaluation
• 1 Artist’s reflection
• 1 Story board or slide analysis (consisting of at least 5 frames)
• 1 of 3 project guideline sheets

• References for media material used in accordance with fair use/copyright laws.

Note: there are three areas of study for class participants to choose.  Students may decide to either make a multimedia power point slideshow, a documentary short, an animated short, or a web blog.  Each project is listed below along with the self-evaluation component.  Separate evaluations will be handed out at the time of project completion.

Multimedia Animated Film guidelines

Part I should be answered as numbered questions.  Part II should be answered in a short narrative of no more than 300 words, but no less than 200.  Part III is provided merely as a checklist for student and teacher review.

I-Subject

Subject of Animated Short- How well does your finished product relate to the viewer about the purpose of the slideshow, organization of ideas, and plot/narrative?  Below are listed the essential questions to assess student domain knowledge & to guide practice.

What is the intended audience?

What are the main ideas and how do they relate to the project’s overall theme?

What is the background knowledge needed to fill out the purpose statement in the slideshow?  (For more information, keep reading)

How do the setting or characters in the animated short help the viewer gain an understanding or appreciation for the topics outlined in the short‘s purpose statement?

How does the animated short accomplish the task of creating an original, purposeful display of the creator’s vision and conceptual efforts?

In transitions created through editing, please choose three &explain briefly your goal for communication to establish clarity of purpose in each segue way.  Think of settings, subjects, and plot.

Storyboard must be supplied of at least 10 frames to demonstrate project preplanning.

What have you done regarding your use of copyrighted material & fair use/copyright laws?  Please provide a reference sheet.

Have you made sure to not list your last name in your presentation?

II-Composition

Composition of shots- What considerations were made in capturing your footage? Below are listed the essential questions to assess student domain knowledge & guide practice.

Explain how each of the terms in bold was used in a compositional assessment of no more than 300 words, but no less than 200.

1. For methods of filming, especially tilting, panning, scale, skew, length of time for segue way; explain how each of the 5 is used in a compositional assessment.

2. Face-framing, perspective, and relevant detail in subject, adequate or appropriate headroom, & texture of subject. 

3. Lighting & mood. Use of natural, diffuse, direct light & artificial light.  Contribution of lighting effects to overall mood of each scene, texture & composition.

4. Use of rule of thirds, emphasis, direction, balance, contrast, focal point, etc.  Explain (Under part II on the student evaluation form) in ten words how each shot benefited compositionally according the use of a minimum of 5 applicable design principles.  Comments on use of (elements & principles) color, texture, unity, line, depth of field, variety, & perspective may also be considered.

5. Backdrop design includes effective elements that help relate to the plot, setting and characters.  “Effective” is determined not just originality of visual quality of the backdrop but also by the ability of the film’s creator to place characters within.

III-Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship- Explain what was accomplished in terms of your ability to edit and combine specific elements into a finished product.  How well do the following elements contribute to the overall success of your piece?

1. Credits/Title- There must be both a title & credit component and both must be executed with attention to instructions found here:

Credits are a great place to cite any copyrighted material.  Please make sure to embed your purpose statementin opening credits.

2. Editing- Raw footage must be submitted to instructor to inform during evaluation as to the level of skill in editing (versus skill in filming using the pause button) More dynamic and creative abilities with respect to editing will result in a higher grade. Points will be taken off for not including raw footage.

3. Animation not overdone- Added where necessary, smoothness of zooming, tilting, and panning.  Camera should be level and footage should not be choppy in terms of camera direction & angle.

4. Audio Rules- Audio is creatively produced and background audio is kept in balance and does not overpower the primary audio.  All non-original, copyrighted audio used is referred to in credits and/or reference sheet.  Voice-overs and other forms of audio are well overlapped, segued and timed. Minimum of three points in the slideshow where audio is enabled and interactive.

5. Supplemental Material- Includes the rubric response sheet, raw footage, or a link to it if footage, trailer or video is uploaded to website (such as youtube)

6. Notes on Length of Feature - Length of feature is very important to the success of the piece, according to the length submitted, grades are listed for features in the designated time periods below & will determine overall success of project.

7. All files such as raw footage and stills must be included with film at time of submission and there must be a minimum of 150 stills.

8. Trailer- A 1-1.5minute trailer must be created & must accompany the movie at time of submission
